i wanted to post up some suggested listening. being asitis, i'm currently employed in the music industry as a talent buyer for a national production company and i get to listen to a LOT of music.
from the top:
*man man - a smash and grab of murder city devils meets tom waits in a carnival tent.
*bonny prince billy (will oldham or "palace") - has been around for quite a while, but, i've been picking up his albums sporatically for the last 2 years. an amazing milieu of hot southern bent trees and cold northern winds, leaving you some sweet place in between.
*magnolia electric co. (jason molina or "songs: ohia") - i've been leaning towards these alt-country twangs for years now and each album is progressively better than the last. if you're into bands like wilco and lucero, you're gonna find some smooth bangin blues and rock thats too irresistible to not leave on repeat for days. this is one of those bands that are even more amazing to see live, be it only for the changeups and true blues vibrating off the stage.
*lambchop - there isn't much to be said for lambchop to do it justice. i can say that myspace.com/lambchopflub has some finer print which will better describe the incredible composition that are coming out of this ever-fluctuating nashville, tennessee band. it might be a little slower for the average listeners taste, but, if you can hold out for the intricate beauty of Kurt Wagner's work, the reward is Nothing but a blur.
*smog - sonorous voiced Bill Calahan tells stories that ring down to the depths of your soul. rife with detail and plagued with gorgeous tracks, smog will dig down into you.
*stacy rock - for those of you in love with jenny lewis (rilo kiley) or feist or even stevie nicks, i think you'll find stacy rock (who has also played lexi in the recent horror/comedy murder party) a refreshingly nostalgic artist. originally from Montana, now swimming in the new york scene. with a voice that seems to be slightly caught in the winds of time picking up notes from the likes of nina simone to touching similarities of dresden dolls, hopefully we'll be hearing a lot more from her in the coming months and years.
*theresa andersson - having been scored and cameoed in a love song for bobby long Theresa Andersson has a gleaming New Orleans tone that reminds you of all those times you left home and were reminded that a little part of you won't ever come back, but, theres still someone out there lettin' you know you're not the only one. okay, maybe that's a little cheesy, but, she's great at bringing back a waterfall of feelings you might've forgot were there.
